“HERITAGE SITES MANAGEMENT AND SCIENTIFIC CONSERVATION”
Prologue:
Historians, archaeological scientists and technologists work in their own field unmindful of what goes on the other disciplines showing a lack of synergy among the different branches, such as geology, chemistry, civil engineering and architect, for proper restoration of art objects. An effort to combine these disciplinary views will bring very fascinating and interesting insights and this will lead to proper understanding and better care and conservation of our cultural heritage. Sources and history and archaeology adeptly show how our ancestors have achieved great heights in scientific and technological fields. There are instances to show that many of their marvelous achievements are still an enigma to us. There are other fields like engineering, architecture and geology in which researchers have achieved for greater expertise than the modernist living in the scientific, art historians, conservation and to explore ways and means for its proper conservation.

The process of restoration is a highly specialized operation. Its aim is to preserve and reveal the aesthetic and historical value of the monument and is based on the respect for original material and authentic documents. The restriction must be preceded and followed by an archaeological and historical study. The technique employed for conservation should be traditional but in some circumstances they may be modern ones for which affirmed scientific basis must exist. Preventive measures are the primary object of the conservation and must be considered prior to the other form of interventions.

Recognizing that many different professions lead to collaboration within the common discipline of conservation and the process requires proper education and training in order to create good co-ordination and co-ordinated action in the field of conservation. Every country should be encouraged to develop at least three to four comprehensive organized institutes giving education and training conservation.

Salient Features:
In this course the condition and training which will be imparted from the range of professional conservator to the students are
  1. Reading of monument or site and identify its emotional and cultural significance
  2. Understand history and technology of the heritage structures in or to define their identify, plan for their conservation.
  3. Understand the setting of the heritage structures and their contents and surrounding in relation to other buildings, gardens and landscape.
  4. Find and absorb all available sources of information relevant to the historical structure.
  5. Understand and analyses the behavior of the monument in the complex system.
  6. Diagnose intrinsic and extrinsic causes of decay for appropriate action.
  7. Inspect and make reports to non-specialists readings of the monument.
A course on conservation also includes all the relevant topics as discussed above. The resource for the course is available and which include:
  1. Sound theoretical knowledge and practical experience in conservation and qualified teachers/experts.
  2. Fully equipped facilities including lecture spaces, audio-visual equipment, laboratories, and workshop and seminar rooms.
  3. Sound theoretical knowledge and practical experience in conservation and qualified teachers/experts.
  4. Library and documentation centre providing computerized information reference collection, facilities for co- ordinate research and access to enterprise international network.
  5. Practical training in dealing with archaeological objects of varied nature.
Syllabus: The syllabus includes eight papers for this one year course. It includes following subjects:
  1. Introduction to Heritage
  2. History, Theory and Concepts of Conservation
  3. Heritage Legislation and Policy
  4. Cultural Heritage Management
  5. Natural Heritage management
  6. Documentation and Condition Assessment
  7. Art and Material Conservation: hands-on practical session
  8. Community Archaeology and Sustainability
  9. Research Methodology in Conservation and Dissertation
Course Duration: One Year
Classes Schedule: week end i.e. Saturday and Sunday
Course Fee: 25,000/-
